As our children have children of their own, I try to impress upon them that their most important job from now until they die is to be a proper role model for their children. Our children watch and learn from us. They watch how we handle relationships with our spouses and with them. They watch our work ethic, how we maintain a household, our health, our spirituality; they watch everything.

Sadly, it was not until my children were fully grown that I realized this fact. Don’t get me wrong, I was a good parent and my children will attest to that, but I could have been so much better if I had only grasped this concept early on.

Now that I am in my sixties and our children are in their thirties and having children of their own, I realize that I am still a role model for them, even if they live across the country or in the next town. They are watching how my bride and I navigate the transition into retirement. They watch how we work to maintain our health. They are watching to see if we are leading a Godly life or whether we just talk about it.

No matter our age, we must live our lives in a manner we wish our children to live theirs. This is not to say they must live their lives like we live ours. This affirmation is all about our being the best people and the best role models we can be, not only to our children, but to everyone around us. The world is watching.

I vow to live my life in the manner I wish my children to live theirs. Will you?
